Mumbai has recorded several cheating cases in this year’s Maharashtra board exams. Despite strict measures, the numbers did not see a major drop. The city’s numbers have remained almost the same over the past three years.

The state board reported 445 cases of exam malpractice in 2025. This is slightly lower than last year’s 496 cases.

The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams had 353 cases. The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams saw 92 cases.

The SSC exams saw a decline in overall cheating cases compared to last year. Only 92 cases were reported this time, down from 140 in 2024.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar had the highest number of cheating incidents. The division recorded 245 cases across both exams. This is more than 55% of the total cases reported statewide. The numbers have remained high for the last two years. HSC alone saw 208 cases in the division.

Despite increased surveillance, authorities could not curb copying. This included drone surveillance and frequent staff changes at exam centres. Officials have a close watch on key locations. However, the results were not as expected. The number of HSC cases remained nearly unchanged from last year’s 356.

Authorities have taken note of the issue. The Maharashtra board plans to introduce stricter reforms for next year. This includes targeted awareness campaigns throughout the year. Students, parents, and teachers will be part of these sessions, which will start at the beginning of the academic year.

Officials are also considering stronger punishments for those involved. The Chief Minister has directed strict action against staff members aiding cheating. Any teacher caught helping students cheat will face immediate termination. Talks with district collectors and police officials have also been held.
