Amidst waiting for the University of Mumbai (MU) to announce its plans for the upcoming examinations, several colleges in Mumbai have been gearing up for online examinations for the final-semester.

The final-semester examinations usually take place in the month of April, however, with the spike in cases of coronavirus, they have been pushed to May for now. Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, and subsequent restrictions in several places, colleges have been expecting MU to announce online examinations.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Principal of St Xavier’s College, Rajendra Shinde, stated, “Given the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases in the city, it is safe to assume that the university will decide on online examinations.” Shinde also pointed out that students had not received any practical classes or lab work for an entire year.

On the other hand, as per the information received from Mumbai University through RTI, re-evaluation seems to play a crucial role with regards to value as it has raised crores in lieu of revaluation charges and photocopying fees. According to reports, till November 2019-20, MU had received INR 2.8 crores from aggrieved students of the past semester. In 2018-19, the sum was INR 3.7 crores, higher than the previous year. With take-from-home online MCQ (multiple choice questions) exams, revaluation revenue would be zero for the exams conducted in the second half of 2020.

However, in recent developments, the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS), a student organisation, has pleaded with the University of Mumbai and the state government to stop affiliated colleges from charging fees for facilities unused amidst the restrictions imposed during the pandemic. The MNVS further stated that the colleges should either refund fees or adjust them in the 2021-22 academic year.
