Mumbai University has decided to reduce the examination fee by 10 per cent for undergraduate and postgraduate courses within months of increasing it.

The fee hike had come into effect after lakhs of students suffered delays and errors in their results. Also, the varsity moved from pen-and-paper assessment to the on-screen marking (OSM) system. The exam fees were raised by INR 500 to INR 1000 for undergraduate exams and INR 1000 to INR 1500 for postgraduate exams. The decision for the same was taken before the assessment move and the hike was enforced in the second half of the year.

On Tuesday, the varsity’s academic council recommended a partial rollback of the new fee introduced after the online exam assessment started. According to the registrar of MU, Dinesh Kamble, the decision to reduce the exam fee is anticipated to be beneficial for students.

The university will also introduce fee slabs for ATKT exams, replacing the current lump-sum fee charged. ATKT students will have to only pay for the number of papers they appear for.

In addition to this, the university will hike exam fees by 5 per cent every year, starting from the academic year 2019-2020. The academic council is trying to find a middle path so as to ensure that the students are not over-burdened and also teachers get substantial remuneration, as told by Kamble.
