Six Indian students have made India proud by bagging four gold and two silver medals in the International Junior Science Olympiad. One of these six students, Subarno Nath Roy — who won a gold medal — is from Mumbai and is in the 10th grade.

This Olympiad took place in Arnhem-Nijmegen, Netherlands on December 12, where a six-member Indian team was selected through a rigorous national-level process in which 50,000 students had participated across the country. This year’s theme was ‘water conservation’.

These six were chosen out of 50,000 candidates, from which initially 300 were selected which finally came down to 36 candidates. However, the journey was not easy as these final six were chosen after contests which were held over 18 days at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai.

Mudita Goyal (Rajasthan), Akhil Jain (Rajasthan), Subarno Nath Roy (Mumbai), Kunal Samanta (West Bengal) bagged gold medal while Niyati Mehta (Ahmedabad) and Adarsh Raj Sahu (Rajasthan) bagged silver medal.

For the last three years, I have been working for the Olympiad. When I won the gold medal, I was ecstatic. Usually, students who are interested in the Olympiad, have to go to Kota, Rajasthan, to train. But as the Allen Career Institute was available in Mumbai, it was easy for me to study in Mumbai.”

Fifty countries had participated in the competition where Taiwan finished first with six gold medals while Russia ranked second with six and India was third with four golds and two silver medals.
