The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) data revealed that around 34% of parents have still not given consent for their children to attend schools offline.

It has been more than a month since the schools across Maharashtra has resumed offline lectures. Most parents are worried about their child's health because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Owing to this, the municipal corporation's education department has started an awareness drive to motivate more parents to let their wards attend offline lectures.

According to the BMC's data, a total of 809 schools have started offline classes for grades 8-10. They have around 71,923 students, of which parents of 47,634 (66.2%) have given consent to send their children for offline classes while 24,289 students (33.8 per cent) still do not have their parents' consent.

There are several reasons for the same, including unwillingness being the most common one. Other reasons include health concerns, migration, transfer to some other school, etc. Ajit Kumbhar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, while talking to the Mid-day, said they are hopeful that the number will increase in the coming days.

On the other hand, school authorities are urging the Maharashtra government to make offline lectures compulsory in Mumbai. Currently, offline schooling is permitted for students studying in classes 8-12. While in rural Maharashtra, classes 5-12 are permitted offline lectures with parental consent.

Meanwhile, as per BMC statistics nearly 58% of students have resumed physical classes at BMC-run schools.
