According to latest report, as many as 17 lakh government teaching and non-teaching staff in Mumbai will participate in the two-days state-level strike by government, semi-government staff on February 23 and 24.

It has come to light that the government employees are striking against the new pension scheme, urgent filling of vacancies, among others.

The state government employees' union on Monday, February 21, warned of an indefinite strike if the government remained indifferent to the demands of the workers.

Teachers Democratic Front Vice President Rajesh Pandya said that teaching and non-teaching staff will participate in the strike.

Earlier, a three-day statewide strike was called on August 7, 8 and 9, 2018. Following which, the Seventh Pay Commission came into force after this agitation. However, various other demands are still pending.

Therefore, the state government had set up a study committee in January 2019 under the chairmanship of the Minister of State for Finance. A few meetings of this committee were held. But a final decision on whether to repeal the new pension policy has not yet been made.

The Central Government, as the case may be, has revised the modalities of the National Pension Scheme. Vishwas Katkar, convener of the Central Union of State Government Employees, alleged that the government has not taken any positive decision in this regard. Hence, they decided to call a strike, he said.
