After the court’s order to provide the contractual workers with a fair pay, Mumbai University (MU)’s administration has failed to act which has made the workers agitated. The workers on Monday protested by not doing any other work but only the things assigned to them.

Mumbai University has recruited a lot of workers on the contractual basis and the workers alleged that they are being made to do other work which is not related to their jobs. Thus, they demanded the administration to pay them equal to the regular employees and not lend extra work. “Similar work, Similar Pay.”

Mumbai University Workers’ Organisation filed a petition in the court regarding this and the court ruled the ruling in favour of the workers. However, the MU administration is still not ready to revert their actions. Reacting to this, the workers carried out a march against the administration at the Kalina Campus.

Workers Organisation Chief Milind Tulsakar asserted that “If MU administration doesn’t listen to our demands, we will agitate in a broader fashion.”

The junior contractual workers in Mumbai University are given merely ₹13 per hour and the senior workers are given ₹18. Instead, according to the rules, they shall be given ₹40 to ₹50. The workers in MU are being exploited.

Since 2008, the workers are demanding an increase in their pay but nobody has focused on their demands. “Thus, the workers protested against the administration as it was the only way left,” Senate Member Supriya Karande said.
