Amid the COVID-19 lockdown, state education officials have directed schools to issue the results of students from class 1 to 9 and 11 for the academic year 2019-2020 online. This comes after the Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research and Training, Pune, issued a circular directing the officials about the same.
With the rise in the number of cases in Maharashtra, the state education department, last month, had cancelled all terminal exams. The schools were directed to promote the students from class 1 to 8 directly whereas the students from class 9 and 11 were to be graded for the second semester on the basis of the average of previous semester exams and unit tests in the year.
While the state department has demanded the results be expedited soon, school administration is in a fix as they are unsure of how to go about with this. All the examination results are in the school premises and with the lockdown in place, it is impossible to get their hands on this. Since the teachers and the school staff have been excluded from the essential services, they are not eligible to use public transport service and no autos or taxis are plying at this time.
Voicing the concern of the school staff, the secretary of Mumbai Principals' Association told Mirror, "How can we declare results with immediate effect? The policymakers have not factored in the lockdown while releasing the order."
The head of the association, Dilshad Thobani pointed out that many schools do not have reliable internet connections, which makes the online declaration of results impossible. Thobani also said that the government should look into providing these services including transportation to reach school premises.
It was also pointed out that the SSC board papers are also lying in the schools premises and these are yet to be evaluated.
