The decision regarding examinations in all Mumbai University-affiliated colleges is expected to be taken in the coming three-four days. On Wednesday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued guidelines for the examination and upcoming academic calendar for universities. UGC has directed all the universities to conduct the exams for the current academic year between July 1 and July 15. The commission has also recommended starting the new academic year from August 1.

After the UGC issued the directives, Mumbai University has started preparing the schedule for the examinations in University-affiliated colleges. Talking to Mumbai Live, Mumbai University Vice-Chancellor, Suhas Pednekar said, "We have received directives from the UGC and following which, the Mumbai University Committee has started working on making necessary preparations. The decision on examinations for University as well as University-affiliated colleges will be taken in the next three-four days."

UGC, on Wednesday, suggested conducting exams for only for students in final semester, as part of the guidelines presented to the HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. On the other hand, the students in intermediate semesters will be graded on the basis of internal assessment of the present and previous semesters. UGC also asked the universities to use innovative modes of examinations and assessments. More importantly, the duration of exams will be reduced from three hours to two hours.

"In case the situation does not get back to normal by July, 50 per cent marks can be graded on the basis of the pattern of internal evaluation adopted by the universities and the remaining 50 per cent marks can be awarded on the basis of performance in previous semester only (if available), suggests the committee. “The internal evaluation can be continuous evaluation, prelims, mid-semester, internal evaluation or whatever name is given for student progression,” the release by UGC read.

Furthermore, a COVID-19 cell will be constituted in the UGC to address similar issues. Alongside, a COVID-19 cell will also be formed in every university to address and resolve the issues of students related to academic calendar and examinations.
