The coronavirus pandemic has been spreading across the country due to which Indian has been under lockdown since March 24, 2020. This led to many plans being cancelled at the state level, one of which was the last class 10 examination in Maharashtra.

However, the class 12 examinations ended in the first week of March, but due to the pandemic spread, there have been no developments about the paper assessment or the announcements of results of HSC board examination.

In an exclusive conversation with Mumbai Live, the state education minister, Varsha Gaikwad, said, "We will look into this soon. For now, it is difficult to assess papers in Mumbai, Pune, and other red and orange zones, as the problems due to coronavirus infection are high in these areas. We are yet to take a decision regarding this matter and will do once the lockdown decision is taken on May 3, 2020. If the government gives us permission, we will look into this immediately. Looking at the current scenario, we may begin the process by allowing the class 12 examination papers to be assessed in green zones, where teachers will have to strictly follow social distancing norms. We may assign one classroom per teacher, as it seems feasible to start this. But the decision will be taken only after the current lockdown is lifted."

Every year, the class 12 Higher Secondary (HSC) examination results are announced in the month of May as the paper assessment ends by April or May. However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, class 12 Maharashtra HSC Board Results for 2020, maybe delayed as the process of paper assessment has been pushed. Further, once the results are announced, the college admission process begins, and the respective colleges in Mumbai open in June or July. Due to the ongoing issue, this may also delay the college admission process for first-year (FY) students.

Talking about the college admission process in Mumbai, Prof. Suhas Pednekar, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai, told Mumbai Live, "We are waiting for UGC to issue guidelines regarding the same, but we have not received any information so far. It was expected last week, but since we have not been told anything, we as a team may take a decision about this in the next few days."

After the lockdown was announced in March, the ministry decided to postpone the examinations for classes 9 and 11. However, since the nationwide lockdown was extended, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray and other ministers in the state government decided that the exams would be cancelled, and schools will have to take a decision at their level to announce the results. Guidelines have been issued by the state government regarding the same, Addressing this, Varsha Gaikwad added, "The results for classes 9 and 11 will be taken for this post the lockdown ends on May 3. We have given our decision from the ministry and they can do it once this phase is over. They can take a call when to announce the same."

The lockdown began in mid-March and has been followed strictly since then. PM Narendra Modi extended the lockdown in India until May 3, 2020. Maharashtra has identified the most number of coronavirus cases in the state and officials in Mumbai and other cities are working hard to contain the virus. More than 800 containment zones have been sealed in Mumbai and curfew-like restrictions have been imposed strictly by the officials.
