After the University Grant Commission (UGC) issued guidelines, Maharashtra's Minister of Higher and Technical Education, earlier in May mentioned that the examinations for final-year students would be held in July, while exams first and second-year students will be cancelled. However, this decision was not appreciated by the students in Mumbai and other cities, and they demanded the cancellation of exams.

As per the update, Uday Samant, on May 17, 2020, wrote to the UGC stating that the examination for final-year students in Maharashtra should not be conducted this year, keeping the coronavirus (COVID-19) spread in mind. He wrote, "In view of COVID-19 pandemic situation in Maharashtra and considering the feasibility of conducting exams of approximately 8 to 10 lakh students from all across Maharashtra and India by maintaining all safety protocols seems very challenging and may endanger the safety and health of the students. Hence, I am of the opinion that the terminal (final) examinations should not be conducted this year."

"I hereby request your goodself to kindly consider the option of promoting students without conducting exams of last year UG/PG and grade them as per UGC guidelines. Request you to please kindly issue guidelines in this regard for the betterment of the students."

Shiv Sena's youth wing, Yuva Sena also wrote to the UGC requesting the same, and earlier this week, Yuva Sena Secretary, Varun Sardesai, spoke to Mumbai Live, regarding the development. He said, "We have already cancelled the exams of first and second-year students, and whatever basis officials are using, be it internal marks or aggregates based on UGC guidelines, the same logic can be used for final year students. There is a precedence in place and they have to just follow it. I understand that UGC is concerned as the final-year exams decide their career ahead. It is the most important certificate. So though it is completely valid, UGC should understand what the students are going through."
