As per reports, around 30 to 40 per cent of the multiplexes are touted to open in Mumbai on Sunday, November 15, that is to see a single Hindi movie hitting the theatres.

Although the state government had earlier permitted move theatres to reopen from November 5 at 50 per cent capacity, a lot of theatres were unable to do so as a result of logistical inconveniences. Amidst the coronavirus induced lockdown imposed on the state earlier, a lot of theatres had cut down on staff or cut their power connections to avoid getting exorbitant electricity bills.

However, the Multiplex Association of India has stated that it will take a few more weeks to get all the 745 screens in the state to start screening films as they have to rehire staff and also come up with a fresh economic model. As per reports, Mumbai has 193 screens in 42 multiplexes whereas 66 are single-screen theatres.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, November 12, PVR Cinemas reopened the doors of its cinema halls for the general public amidst stringent precautionary measures. This comes as a relief as PVR cinemas which has 831 screens in 173 properties operating in 71 cities across the country, stated that the reopening of theatres in Maharashtra has been crucial as it occupies the largest percentage of screen share.
