Owing to prolonged monsoon, only seven per cent water is left in all the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai.

As this water is sufficient for the next 26 days only, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Iqbal Singh Chahal has confirmed a 10 per cent water cut in the city from July 1 until the reservoirs have sufficient water reserves. Moreover, CIDCO has imposed a 15 per cent water cut in its supply areas from today, June 28.

Even though the rains have lashed the city and surrounding areas, the catchment areas have not received proper rains. Therefore, only 6.97 per cent water storage remaining in all the seven dam areas that supply water to Mumbai.

Considering this, on Tuesday, June 27, the civic administration informed that water will be reduced until sufficient water supply is not obtained in the 7 lakes that supply water to Mumbai. In this regard, the Water Department of the BMC sent this proposal to the Commissioner of the civic body, which was approved yesterday.

Decrease in water storage in the state

On the other hand, there has been a big decrease in water storage in the state. Compared to last year, the water storage in the dams has reduced to a great extent. The situation is similar in Vidarbha, Marathwada, West Maharashtra, Konkan and North Maharashtra. This is due to the delayed monsoon. Additionally, this can cause the problem of drinking water along with agriculture purposes.
