Since August 15, an environmental group by the name Environment Life has removed around 200 kilos of trash every Sunday from the mangrove forests in Navi Mumbai.

As per a report in Hindustan Times, the group has eliminated over 1,000 pieces of shoes, slippers, sandals, as well as, bulbs, plastic waste, construction debris, and polystyrene from the forests last Sunday. The marine litter gets stuck in tall breathing roots of mangrove as it makes its way from the sea or creeks. Therefore, the Environment Life plans to conduct this drive every week until the government comes up with a solution to the problem.

Back in July, the National Green Tribunal principal bench had passed an order at a hearing on asking the Government of Maharashtra to provide a detailed report on the total quantity of garbage collected at mangroves along with a plan to dispose of them within six weeks.

The Forest Department’s Mangrove Cell had earlier stated that there could be around 50,000 tons of plastic waste spread across 6,600 hectares of Mumbai’s mangroves.

Moreover, the rivers, creeks, and the ocean is also threatened by plastic waste that is discarded by the people, thus polluting the sea as a consequence. The MPCB has also mentioned that around 93 per cent of the pollution in the mangroves and wetlands across the city are from untreated waste, mostly plastic.
