Volunteers Mull Resuming Dadar Beach Cleanup Drives as More Garbage Has Accumulated

Volunteers Mull Resuming Dadar Beach Cleanup Drives as More Garbage Has Accumulated

Dadar Beach underwent a massive transformation after volunteers from across the city gathered together to clean it up. However, given that the beaches have been mostly inaccessible for the past few months, volunteers who worked on the cleanup project say that they have to start the process all over again.

This is primarily because the oceans remain polluted and have brought back tons of garbage to the shores while some say the lack of cleanup drives during the lockdown has led to more waste being dumped on Dadar’s shores again.

‘Beach Warrior’ was one of the volunteer groups that led the charge of cleaning up Dadar’s polluted coastline. Its founder, Chinu Kwatra said “The ocean throws back garbage along the shore every monsoon. But this time, the lack of a cleanup drive during the lockdown led to more garbage being accumulated on the shore.”

“We have noticed that people living near the beach throw a lot of garbage into the sea. As more people were at home during the lockdown, more garbage must have been thrown. But I can say that the plastic waste has reduced substantially due to the ban. We are eager to start the clean-up drive and this is the right time to resume,” Kwatra added.

Beach cleaning volunteers have previously cleared nearly 2,500 tons of garbage from the 2.5 km stretch at Dadar Beach. This was carried out over a course of 900 cleanup drives, with the effort even receiving acclaim from the United Nations (UN).

Additionally, Malhar Kalambe who is a member of Mahim, Dadar, and Mithi River cleanup drives said that Mithi River carries a majority of the city’s waste into the Arabian Sea, which subsequently is found on the shores. “We are responsible for this garbage and waste, so we should change our habits,” Kalambe added.

A contracted supervisor working for the BMC concurred with the volunteers’ claims while urging citizens to be more disciplined in order to have cleaner beaches in Mumbai.
