Behind Jankalyan Nagar in Malad, a cement concrete road has come up amid the mangroves. Earlier this month, there has been massive cutting of mangroves at various places in Malad West, stated local residents and activists.

They further said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), police and collector's office has denied acting on the complaints they have received.

Advocate Godfrey Pimenta stated that even though sending a lot of complaints to Malwani police and mangrove cell, they have failed to take action against the offenders. They have demanded the stringent application of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against those destroying the environment.

Meanwhile, the chief conservator at the mangrove conservation cell Virendra Tiwari said that if the area is the reserved forest, they will take the action. However, if it is not a reserved forest, then they will inform the police and collector's office.

The cell will ask them to take action to stop the dumping and destruction of mangroves.

He further said that as per the Bombay High Court (HC) order, it is the responsibility of the civic body to remove debris, and the Maharashtra government will pay for the same.

They have been holding discussions with the civic administration to remove debris at various sites as well. The discussions are held so that restoration work can be carried out.
