Animal welfare officers rescued a male golden jackal from Godrej Creekside Colony which is situated near the mangroves in Vikhroli (East) on Thursday. Three jackals have been rescued so far in the last one year.

The Golden Jackal is a protected species and is seen frequently in the mangrove areas in the search of crabs and other creatures.

At around 2:00 pm, some of the residents spotted the jackal sitting under a tree. Due to no boundary between the colony and the mangrove, the residents saw the jackal which had injury marks on its legs. The residents then informed the Godrej authorities who called the animal welfare officers.

Later, a team from Resqink Association for Wildfire Welfare (RAWW) reached the place and called the forest department.

Mahesh Ithape, a RAWW member told Hindustan Times

We tried placing some water near the jackal for it to drink, but he was in so much pain that he did not even try. We transported him to a wildlife veterinarian in our ambulance.”

Veterinarians said that the jackal was around one-and-a-half years old and had injuries on the right leg due to a probable fight with a dog or another jackal. The jackal is now under medical care and is being checked for rabies and other diseases.

Last year, an injured male golden jackal was rescued from Godrej staff quarters in Vikhroli on May 25. The animal got separated from the pack and was chased by a group of dogs. It was later rescued from the residential society where it had drifted to. A similar event happened in January 2017.

As per the officials from State Mangrove Cell, there are approximately 12 jackals that live in the Vikhroli mangroves.
