Authorities to Hold Online Public Hearing for Proposed Tree Felling at Aarey

The State Government of Maharashtra is seeking suggestions from the public for the construction of Metro Bhavan in the controversial Aarey region. The State proposed taking up 2.03 hectares of land designated as a green zone for ‘Metro Bhavan and Metro rail allied users’ back in August 2019.

However, since this was proposed last year, not a lot of progress has been made. This is also because there was a change in government when Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray was appointed the CM in a coalition known as the Maha Vikas Aghadi or MVA, defeating the incumbent BJP government led by Devendra Fadnavis.

Understandably, the State has received a total of 2,563 objections from citizens for this proposal, though the public hearing hasn’t occurred yet. Keeping this in mind, the authorities have decided to hold an online hearing for the public, providing them with a safe platform to voice their concerns at a time when social distancing is required.

It’s worth pointing out that CM Thackeray’s administration hasn’t provided a clear message on the Metro Bhavan proposed by the previous administration. However, one of Thackeray’s first decisions as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra was to halt the construction of the Metro-3 car shed, and promising that no more trees will be cut in the region.

Deputy Director of Town Planning, A B Patil said that the online hearing will most likely be conducted next week and that a report of the hearing will be submitted to the State after that. However, there’s still no clear date available for this public online hearing.
