The active contribution of the ALM has made it possible to add to the serenity of the Worli Hill Road area as its entire expanse is planted with 1,24, 000 trees that are in full bloom. Yet this was not the case in the 90s. As a matter of fact, the state of this area was such that one could barely manage stand given the bad odour scattered all over as people used to poop and pee around here and there.

But Rahmin Jacob Charikar happened who used to stay in Charikar Manav Mandir building. The story traces back to the early 90s when once this place was visited by a group of tourists from abroad. Although, all arrangements were done to accommodate all their necessities, but given the pitiful state of the area the tourists decided that they might as well put up at a hotel. This whole incident affected Charikar’s sentiments so much that he took it onto him the ownership of getting the area swept clean.

He adopted the Gandhigiri approach. So whenever he used to spot a kid pooping on the road, he simply used to hand him a chocolate. He was branded as mad for his this approach but all the name-calling did not stop him from working for the cause. Slowly people started understanding his point, eventually giving up pooping on the roads.

Today, Charikar is 62 years old and people address him by Babuji. When ALM came into existence in 1992, Charikar took active participation in getting toilets constructed. It has been 18 years that police is after this matter for 18 long years. He is supported in this cause Shivraja Rai Anumalla aka Anna who is of 50 years and he has been helping Babuji for the past 18 years to help conserve the environment.
