The "Regreening Vulnerable Neighbourhoods" project is repurposing vacant community areas in an effort to combat climate change and enhance the living conditions in M East ward of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The project is spearheaded by leading organisations such as the World Resources Institute India, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA).

It aims to transform underutilised spaces into green havens while promoting accessibility, especially for women and children.

The project is currently focused on rejuvenating five community spaces within the M East ward. One of these transformed spaces is the community area at Mankhurd's Lallubhai Compound, which was previously marred by alcohol consumption and smoking. However, due to collaborative efforts of stakeholders and local groups since March 2022, this space has been revitalised and will now serve as a study area for students.

The Regreening project extends beyond Lallubhai Compound. Deen Dayal Maidan, an entertainment area in Cheeta Camp, and Trombay Public High School and Shahaji Nagar Public School are also undergoing transformation. These sites are carefully selected based on the Mumbai Climate Action Plan. They will contribute to the overall green cover and resilience of the M East ward.

To ensure the success of the project, a comprehensive assessment of soil types and local ecology within a one-kilometre radius of each site was conducted. Moreover, inclusive space sharing has been a key focus, with consultations involving locals and technical specialists. With this approach, the civic body aims to encourage a diverse range of people to utilise the green spaces.

The impact of these interventions extends beyond the physical transformation of spaces. The regreened areas not only combat climate threats but also provide a welcoming environment for all, empowering the community and promoting social cohesion.
