According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has removed the concrete cases from nearly 983 trees throughout mumbai in the past three days. In addition to this, 94 kg of nails as well as 1,325 billboards have been removed from the trees.
These developments are part of the civic body’s Garden Department's one-week special drive to ensure that Mumbai trees are free of concrete, nails and billboards. The said initiative had commenced earlier this week on Monday, April 18.
Jeetendra Pardeshi, Superintendent of Gardens, BMC was quoted in a narrative by the Indian Express elaborating on how concreting near the roots hinders its growth, adding that if the soil does not absorb water, the tree could die.
Further, Pardeshi remarked that to date, from an aggregate of 983 trees, concrete has been removed, on the other hand, from 6,178 trees, nails and billboards have been removed.
He elaborated that a total of 94.194 kg of nails and 1,325 billboards have also been removed. In addition to these steps taken by the authority, awareness regarding the campaign is being spread too.
This drive is being undertaken through the "Vruksh Sanjeevni Muhim" initiative from April 18 to 23. In addition, civic body personnel, many NGOs and educational institutions will also be participating.
