The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered the closure of over 200 construction sites across the city for violating of dust-control and air quality norms.
The recent development comes amid deteriorating air quality levels recorded at multiple locations in Mumbai over the past few weeks.
In a major crackdown after inspections and follow-up checks, work at 233 sites was halted for failing to comply with prescribed environmental guidelines.
The action is part of a citywide drive to curb rising particulate matter levels, particularly during the winter months when pollution tends to spike.
It is pertinent to note that the air quality across Mumbai and MMR, which includes Thane and Navi Mumbai, has deteriorated sharply since the start of the new year.
As of January 6, 2026, the city's air quality index was recorded at 167, which falls under unhealthy category, according to AQI.in.

Between December 1 and December 31, last year, the civic body issued show-cause notices to 557 construction projects for contributing to air pollution, said BMC officials. Of these, the BMC had already issued 353 show-cause notices and 121 stop-work notices against polluting sites between December 1 and 16, 2025.
Owing to this, in December, the civic body had proposed a fivefold hike in penalties for violating air pollution norms, raising the minimum fine from ₹10,000 to ₹50,000.
