The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed to prepare digital maps to demarcate the buffer zone of up to 4 km around Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali.

This project will help the municipality to identify the boundaries of development areas. Moreover, the proposal also includes a superimposing development plan 2034 on the maps.

The Center had declared SGNP as an eco-sensitive zone in 2016 and as per its notification, a regional plan is to be prepared for this area.

Accordingly, the municipality has now decided to create a digital map of SGNP. For this, aerial photography will be done and the zonal master plan of the municipal area will be prepared.

The proposal is intended to put an end to the controversy over the metro car shed here. The zonal master plan, which clearly defines the boundaries of SGNP and will not leave room for further development in the eco-sensitive zone.

To prepare this master plan, BMC has decided to appoint a private consultant and INR 3.4 crores will be spent for this. The scheme is to be completed within 24 months after awarding the contract. This work will be done in eight phases. The proposal states that payments will be announced after each phase is completed.

The project will delineate existing land use, biodiversity, topography, eco-sensitive and area development plans. It will be done with water restoration and management, existing water conservation and the needs of the local people in mind, administration officials said.

An administrative official said, "This digital mapping means that we will have a zonal map in front of us, in which development plan maps will be superimposed. This will help us understand which areas are eco-sensitive, to prevent further development of such areas."
