Following the state government’s decision to shift the Metro 3 corridor from Aarey to Kanjurmarg, citizen groups will reportedly submit a plan to the government asking for integration across corridors.

It is worth noting that citizen groups had previously asked the government to cancel Metro 6 altogether and extend Metro 3 by 6 kilometres instead.

On Sunday, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced that the Metro 3 car shed will be built at Kanjurmarg along with Metro 6 that spans from Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli.

An architect from Mumbai, Nitin Killawala said - “We have made similar plans for all the Metro projects that are under construction. The Metro-4 project, which stretches from Wadala to Kasarwadavali, can also connect until Kanjurmarg and the key locations can be covered via city buses.”

He has suggested the authorities to use a route via Marol Naka that crosses Saki Vihar and  Chandivali until Vikhroli on the Eastern Express Highway. “All Metro projects are being constructed on arterial roads leading to utter traffic chaos. All these projects are also facing inordinate delays. Our plan is more holistic,” he added.

Killawala will be present with citizen groups from Powai accompanied by fellow architects and activists to present the aforementioned plan in a webinar scheduled for next week. The state will be approached after this, it is said.

Activists and citizens protested in large numbers at Aarey when the government was considering the construction of the Metro 3 car shed in the area last year. Although the car shed has been shifted from the location, it’s clear that the state has a few more challenges coming up.
