While rainfall-related water logging used to be a rare occurrence in south Mumbai, incessant rains on Wednesday, July 13, morning along with the high tide and gusty winds caused water logging in the said area. These included Marine Drive, the road outside Taraporewala Aquarium, Islam Gymkhana, Haji Ali junction and Peddar Road, reports stated.

Accounts have quoted residents as well as elected public representative who claimed that waterlogging was intense at locations in Marine Drive where the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken construction work on the Mumbai Coastal Road. Some also blamed the Mumbai metro construction.

On the other hand, civic officials elucidated that Marine Drive areas were water logged because of the high tide. Herein waves reached up to 4.68 metres on Wednesday afternoon. This, they said caused flooding at chronic flooding spots in Mumbai's suburbs and the island city, narratives mentioned.

Officials reportedly added that Mumbai registered over 100mm of rainfall on many instances in the past two weeks, but not even on one day was waterlogging seen in the Marine Drive area. The situation, they claimed was different on Wednesday because of the high tide which caused water to enter the road. They alleged that the water was on the road for some time after which they flushed it out by means of dewatering pumps.

In other developments, one house house collapse, one landslide and 68 tree fall incidents were registered on Wednesday in Mumbai. However, no injury was witnessed owing to rain-related mishaps, reports cited.
