With heavy rains continuing to lash Mumbai and its adjoining area, the July rainfall is inching closer to the 1,000-mm mark. The city has already breached its average rainfall for the month.
According to reports, till Wednesday, July 13, evening, the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Santacruz observatory registered 996mm of rainfall in July. Further, in the Thane district, the Modak Sagar lake began overflowing on Wednesday afternoon.
From the seven water-supplying lakes to Mumbai, it was the first to have overflowed this monsoon. Based on accounts, the full supply level of Modak Sagar lake is 163.15 m. Further, the aggregate water stocks in the seven lakes now stand at 56 per cent for the needed quantum of 14.47 lakh million litres.

Moreover, the IMD has put an "orange alert" in place for Mumbai and Thane on Thursday, July 14 with the rain intensity anticipated to increase. However, the weather conditions are anticipated to ease from Friday, July 15.
On Saturday, July 16, on the other hand, moderate rainfall is expected. It has been reported that in the nine-hour period ending at 5.30 pm on Wednesday, the IMD's Colaba observatory registered 49.8 mm of rainfall, while the Santacruz one saw 66 mm. This falls in the moderate to heavy rain section.
Narratives suggest that till July 18, high tide levels will be over 4.5 m. On Thursday, the high tide will be 4.82m at 12.33 pm.
