The Maharashtra State Power Generation Co Ltd (Mahagenco) has received new directives from the Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and State Energy Minister Nitin Raut to commence working on 602 Megawatt (MW) solar projects across Maharashtra. It is proposed that this project be undertaken in three stages to cut down the workload.

The projects will be undertaken at land owned by the State Power Generation Company, an official said while adding that this will be set in place under an Engineering Procuring Commissioning (EPC) contract.

"In the first stage, 187MW solar projects, including those at Kaudgaon (50MW), Latur (60MW), thermal power station land at Bhusawal, Koradi, Parli and Nashik (52MW) and Sakri (25MW) will be developed, partly with bank loans. A proposal will be submitted immediately for cabinet approval," the official added.

The Central Railway recently announced plans to make Lonavala and Khandala stations run entirely on solar energy. Officials have so far installed solar panels across the two stations, mostly for lighting the premises at dark.

Moving towards solar energy is something that multiple governments have considered in the past, though it hasn’t seen an effective implementation as of yet. Solar panels are sustainable in the long run and are considered highly effective particularly during the harsh summers.
