According to a recent study by the World Resources Institute (WRI) India, greenhouse gas emissions from commercial, institutional and residential buildings in the city is estimated to rise 3.3 times by 2050. The analysis added that the figure was arrived at, taking into account that buildings and power plants are accountable for more than 60% of Mumbai’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

On Tuesday, a stakeholders consultations meeting was held to make Mumbai’s Climate Action Plan, wherein the study, dependent on the present consumption patterns was reciprocated, highlighted reports.

Mehul Patel, manager of the climate programme at WRI India, during his presentation, elaborated that institutional, commercial and residential buildings’ GHG emissions are majorly controlled by electricity and LPG. He added that the prominent sources are air conditioners, geysers, fans, refrigerators, LPG, kerosene and PNG. The study also discovered that whilst the city’s electricity demand is 3,400-3,600 MW, its rooftop solar capacity is almost half of this at 1,724 MW of which 1,300 MV can come from residential buildings and the remaining from educational and industrial buildings, he stated in addition that K-West ward and R-Central ward have the foremost solar potential.

Similarly, maximum GHG emissions that are 32% come for the residential sector, trailing at 30% was the transport sector.

Tactics to deal with the swift surge in emission levels were also discussed by the panellist. This comprised propelling alterations in building designs to curtail energy consumption, retrofitting current infrastructure and decentralizing clean energy schemes.
