Heavy Rainfall expected in Mumbai for the next 5 days

Weather experts have stated that a low-pressure area is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal from August 19, 2020, and this may lead to the heavy rainfall, which is likely to in the next 24 hours.

Mumbai has been experiencing rainfall for the last few weeks, and as per recent updates, the city will get torrential rains for the next four to five days. The meteorological department has stated that Mumbai and Thane will receive heavy rainfall, including the first day of Ganeshotsav, i.e. August 22, 2020.

A low-pressure area is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal from August 19, 2020, and this may lead to the heavy rainfall, which is likely to in the next 24 hours. The pressure may shift to the west in the next 3-4 days, due to which Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa may experience the torrential weather for up to 5 days.

The forecast released by Skymet states, "Patchy showers are continuing over Mumbai and suburbs for the last many days. During the last 24 hours, Santacruz recorded 11 mm and Colaba 13 mm of rains. Many other suburbs of the city also witnessed scattered rains. The cyclonic circulation is persisting over Gujarat and an east-west shear zone is running along latitude 20 degrees north, in the vicinity of Mumbai. The cyclonic circulation is fetching humid winds from the Arabian Sea. The shear zone is also adding rain activities over Konkan and Goa including Mumbai. Nearby areas such as Mahabaleshwar and Matheran have recorded heavy showers. Rain activities may increase to some extent over Mumbai and suburbs between August 20 and 22, 2020." 

Meanwhile, data also states that Maharashtra has received 16 per cent more rainfall than the average. Since June 1, the average annual rainfall has been 713.7 m, however, 826.7 mm of rainfall was recorded this year. However, Mumbai city and suburbs, along with other areas like Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Beed and Solapur have received more than 60 per cent rainfall.

Many areas in the Konkan Marathwada belt of the state received good rainfall in June and July, however, over the last few weeks, these and many more localities in the state have been dry. Data released by the government showed that the dams are also filling up due to good rains. Out of 7 lakes which supplying water to Mumbai, Vihar and Tulshi lakes have started overflowing. Other lakes like Modak Sagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna are almost 90 per cent full.
