Mumbai: Heavy Rains Bring Respite to City’s Lakes

Heavy rains across Mumbai has brought some good news for the city’s lakes. Lakes like Modak Sagar and Tansa have started overflowing as of Thursday. This comes just four days after these lakes had less than one-third of the water stock. 

The lakes are situated on the border of Thane and Palghar while the region received over 300 mm of rain in a period of 24 hours. This has led to the water stock increasing from 18 to 54 per cent in just four days.

The current stock in the lakes is more than it was in the same period in 2020 and 2019. The data from July 18 shows that the stock across all seven lakes was at 2,87,082 million litres (ML) or 18 per cent. This shot up to 5,31,734 ML or 37 per cent on July 21 following non-stop rain. 

On July 22, the stock went up by an additional 17 per cent to reach 7,79,568 ML. As of right now, the lakes have filled up to 54 per cent capacity. 

In addition to heavy rains around the lakes, other locations across Thane and Palghar saw more than 200 mm of rain. While Mahabaleshwar received a record-breaking 480 mm of rainfall, Jawhar received 434 mm and Wada saw 418 mm of rain. 

Other regions like Matheran (331 mm), Nashik’s Peth (315 mm), Karjat (321 mm), Lonavala (313mm) also witnessed heavy rain. Regions like Colaba and Santacruz in Mumbai saw 96 mm and 57 mm of rain respectively.
