IMD Says Mumbai Will Experience Increased Heat and Humidity Going Into April

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the Automatic Weather Station in Santacruz observed a maximum temperature of more than 38 degrees on Wednesday.

The IMD has said that this will likely continue across Mumbai, Thane, and the Konkan region for the next three to four days.

IMD’s guidance says that although there will be a temporary fall in the temperature levels heading into April, the heat will likely be at an all-time high due to the arrival of westerly winds that increase the moisture content in the air.

An IMD official urged citizens to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated given that March has a past history of recording very high temperatures. The official added that these regions have a history touching 40 degrees Celsius in the month of March.

“In the last week of March and towards the beginning of April, wind pattern over the Arabian Sea changes from easterly to westerly, which also brings in a lot of moisture. The model guidance indicates that in the last week of this month (around 27-28), the maximum temperature across the entire Konkan region, including Mumbai and Thane, will be around 38 degrees Celsius,” the official said.

“After this, the remaining days of March and the first week of April will see a slight downward trend in terms of the temperature, which will reach around 34-36 degrees Celsius,” the official added.

The IMD is also anticipating thunderstorms with lightning and medium to intense spells of rain accompanied by strong winds in Satara, Pune, Nashik, Dhule and Kolhapur districts this week. The agency has also said there may be minor spells of hail showers across Kolhapur.
