According to sources, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sent a proposal to the Central Government to allow citizens to get vaccinated near their homes.

Informing the same, BMC Additional Commissioner Suresh Kakani stated that the civic body aims to complete the vaccination drive by May 31. At the moment, BMC is conducting 40,000 to 45,000 tests per day. However, due to the increasing instances of cases of coronavirus, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has instructed to conduct one lakh tests for COVID-19 every day.

Currently, vaccines are being given to citizens between the ages of 45 and 60 as well as senior citizens which is underway at 100 places across Mumbai.

Speaking about allowing vaccination camps to be set up in housing societies, Kakani added, “The BMC has planned to make arrangements for vaccinations in housing societies. We have sent a letter to the central government seeking their permission. After a nod from the government, we will allow private hospitals to set up centres on the premises of housing societies.” further stating, “Before granting permissions to hospitals, we will check if hospital teams have adequate medical facilities. We will check all aspects.”

As per reports, the civic body will soon start the vaccination process in two shifts from 7 am to 2 pm and 2 pm to 9 pm. Although the civic body has allowed vaccination centres to be run 24 hours, at the moment, the BMC centres shut down at 5 pm. Moreover, more than 9.70 lakh people have been vaccinated in the city, as per the records shared by the BMC.
