According to media reports, the Maharashtra government is touted to hold a public hearing via a video conference on July 20, to review the objections or the suggestions they have received against the construction of the Metro Bhavan in Aarey.

The Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966 had issued a notice under Section 37 (1AA) which suggested changes to the Development Plan-2034 for Greater Mumbai in respect of land bearing CTS No. 589A (Part) of Pahadi Goregaon (E), Mumbai, for Metro Bhavan and Metrorail Allied Users.

In the past, the protests against the mass tree-cutting of trees in Aarey took an ugly turn when authorities from Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) allegedly started axing the greenery in the area. This move was following Bombay High Court's dismissal of all petitions challenging the action of the Tree Authority of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in allowing the MMRCL to cut down 2,656 trees in the area. Several citizens in the city had protested and objected against the same stating that the felling of trees poses a threat to the biodiversity in the area. However, the people who filed suggestions and objections have now received the required correspondence from the government about a hearing via video conferencing.

Zoru Bhatena, an activist who has been protesting against the felling of trees in Aarey further stated to the media that even though the government has stated to the people that they are going to protect the entire forest, they are privately continuing their plans to build a Metro Bhavan inside it. He further added that the fight will not stop till the Aarey forest has been declared as a protected one. Furthermore, Bhatena stated that it is time the government steps up and acts officially to protect the greenery of the city Mumbai. Earlier in June, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Aarey administration in a counter-affidavit filed in the Supreme Court stated that the forests in Goregaon are part of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park which was the first time any state body has put on record that Aarey is adjacent to the national park.
