According to reports, due to Cyclone Tauktae in Maharashtra, 536 instances of structural damages (house collapse, roof collapse, pole uprooting) was reported in Sindhudurg, 61 in Ratnagiri and two each in Raigad and Thane districts till last night.

In Thane, five vehicles and a house suffered damage in separate incidents of tree falls in the lake city over the last 24 hours. The effects of the same were felt across the city of Mumbai where several big and small trees were uprooted due to the gusty winds and continual downpour. Till Monday morning, the city had recorded 8.37 mm rains, 6.53 in eastern suburbs and 3.92 in western suburbs, substantially cooling down the weather of Mumbai. Moreover, strong winds along the Konkan coast uprooted trees, which fell on railway tracks at five places between Madgaon and Thivim stations.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister’s Office has informed that as many as 12,420 people were evacuated from the coastal district in the view of Cyclone Tauktae. In addition, the Indian Coast Guard has informed that 4,526 fishing boats of Maharashtra and 2,258 boats of Gujarat which were out at sea have safely returned to the harbour.

On the other hand, earlier on Sunday, May 16, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) authorized an orange alert for Mumbai, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places with strong winds on Monday. According to civic officials, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Navy are on alert as Cyclone Tauktae intensifies to a very severe cyclonic storm and is passing close to Mumbai.
