Maharashtra: State Board for Wildlife Sanctioned Two New Sanctuaries

A member of the committee elaborated on how the two sanctuaries are in Jalgaon's Muktainagar at Muktai Bhavani and Gadchiroli's Kolamarka.

According to the latest reports, on Monday, June 6, the State Board for Wildlife (SBWL) sanctioned two additional sanctuaries in a meeting chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray

Based on accounts, a member of the committee elaborated on how the two sanctuaries are in Jalgaon's Muktainagar at Muktai Bhavani and in Gadchiroli's Kolamarka. 

It has been reported that the sanctuary at Muktai Bhavani will be across 122 sq km and is situated between Melghat and Yaval. Narratives suggest that tigers from Melghat usually come there for breeding. While that Kolamarka, hosts 22 wild buffaloes.

Similarly, Maharashtra Environment Minister, Aaditya Thackeray took to Twitter to say, "The 18th State Wildlife Board meeting today chaired by Hon’ble CM Uddhav Thackeray ji has approved 12 new Conservation Reserves that totally cover an area of 692.74 Sq Km and 2 New Sanctuaries covering an area of 298.61 Sq km."

He added under the leadership of Thackeray, the state government has commenced on the agenda of sustainable development in urban and hinterland areas with developing forest cover and biodiversity protection.

The SBWL had recommended creating one more sanctuary at Mahendri, however, the chief wildlife warden remarked that a call on the same will be taken later, reports mentioned.

The SBWL has reportedly sanctioned 12 new conservation reserves covering an area of 692.74 sq Km which are situated in Chivatibari and Aladari in Dhule, Kalwan, Muragad, Trimbakeswar, Igatpuri in Nashik, Masai Pathar in Kolhapur, Mogar kasa in Nagpur, Dare khurd in Satara, Bhor in Pune, Raigad and Roha in Raigad.

In addition to this, the board has also recommended 18 more reserves. Moreover, some areas of Mayuresh, Bor, New Bor, Extended bor, Narnala, Lonar, Gugamal, Yedshi-Ramlingghat, Naigaon – Mayur and Yedshi – Rehekuri have been proclaimed as critical wildlife habitats.
