In an attempt to create more green space in Mumbai, the state government intends to develop Japanese-style Miyawaki forests with more trees in less space. As a part of this, MMRDA started afforestation at BKC on Wednesday with the planting of trees by Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray. MMRDA commissioner SVR Srinivas, Additional Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik were also present on the occasion.

There are 35 species of trees being planted in the Miyawaki Forest at BKC, including a variety of fruit trees, flowers and medicinal plants. These mainly include different types of trees.

Miyawaki forests, which have more trees in less space, are related to the concept of “Devarai” in Konkan and “Urban Forest” in Singapore.

Additionally, plants in Miyawaki-developed forests grow faster than normal forests. Normally, a tree grows tall in less than half the time it takes to grow a normally planted tree. Miyawaki forests which usually develop in two years are dense because of the short distance between the trees. Normally, after two to three years, these forests grow naturally and continue to provide oxygen continuously. In this regard, the government is trying to maintain an ecological balance by developing more Miyawaki forests in Mumbai.
