The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to transform the area below the BKC-Chunabhatti connector at Dharavi into a recreational arena, reported the Mid-Day. It is claimed that the said area will be the biggest of such a kind in the said locality.

The green space will be 87,000 square feet and will cost the authorities nearly Rs 1.6 cr, cites the report. Equipped with a 400-metre jogging track, it will also have a playground along the adjacent plot. Other facilities in this recreational space include children play area and an open gym. If reports are to be believed, the work will be completed in the next six months with tenders already been floated.

The civic authority, through the years, has been looking to transform the empty spaces under the bridge into open green spaces. Not only is this initiative environmentally driven, but is also done to curtail encroachment by vehicles and the homeless.

According to the report, since there is a nullah adjacent to the planned space, a retaining wall that is 135 meters long will be built. A Miyawaki forest will be made next to the said wall. Floodlights will also be built on the flyover’s pier to ensure light and keep the antisocial elements away. With the aid of CSR funds, a 50-seat community toilet will also be constructed near the park.

The BMC has taken a NOC from the MMRDA that built the flyover. The account also states that after the WIT Park the said area will be the second-largest green area in Dharavi.
