There are many correlations that are drawn between the air quality and the temperature of the city. However, Tuesday morning seems to be an exception of sorts. The temperature of Mumbai continues to be same but the air quality has reached a “severe” mark.

In 2019 too, when the air pollution level of the city was high, it was usually the Bandra Kurla Complex and Mazgaon that recorded the highest AQI level. The air quality in Mumbai has been in the poor range ever since Christmas and things have not improved from that point on.  According to Dr Gufran Beig, Project Director - SAFAr, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, "In the last couple of days, the temperature in the city has dipped and even the winds are blowing at a slow speed, which has increased the pollution level of the city. However, from today the winds have started to blow and as a result we will see the pollution level coming down".

While the air quality level was at Bandra has reached an emergency state that the AQI touched the 500 mark, the cleanest air was recorded at Dombivali with AQI of 36. There were several places in Mumbai area, where the AQI level was under 100, which included places like Vile Parle, Kurla, Worli and Powai.

According to a recent study conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Mumbai’s air has dangerous concentrations of PM10. This study was carried out in 24 peninsular cities of the country and it found that Mumbai, ranks first in this list. Most people have been stressing to take immediate action against the rising air pollution before the situation turns worse.

Decoding the AQI parameters

  • An AQI between 0-50 is considered "good"
  • An AQI between 51-100 "satisfactory"
  • An AQI between 101-200 "moderate"
  • An AQI between 201-300 "poor"
  • An AQI between 301-400 "very poor"
  • An AQI between 401-500 "severe"
  • An AQI above 500 is "severe-plus or emergency" category
