On Sunday, February 6, Mumbai’s air quality became “very poor”, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) nearing 316, stated accounts. It has been reported that the air quality of Mumbai’s Mazgaon was worse than that of Delhi at 426 or “severe”.

The poor air quality has been attributed to a ‘dust storm’ which orientated from around the border of Rajasthan and Pakistan on February 3, stated experts in reports.

Based on narratives, however, this is unusual because the city’s proximity to the sea generally helps the pollution to disperse faster. In the absence of the coastal breeze, experts are of the opinion that Mumbai’s AQI could have been worse than Delhi, claimed accounts.

According to reports, on Sunday, the AQI at Mumbai’s Colaba, Chembur and Andheri were also in the “very poor” section. The said air category is believed to be harmful to those indulging in outdoor exertion, especially the working class because it could result in respiratory diseases.

It has been reported that many locals complained of throat, chest and nasal congestion post-Mumbai’s AQI crossing the 500-threshold between January 24-25. It has been claimed in accounts that the January 25 pollution was on a record level since the AQI beyond 500 had never been reported in Mumbai.

On the other hand, February commenced on a cooler note for Mumbaikars. It has been reported that the forecast predicted that the minimum and maximum temperatures can be under normal by the end of last week.
