On Monday, January 11, Mumbai witnessed its hottest January day in a decade as the minimum temperature rose to a record high.

According to reports, a minimum temperature of 23.5 degrees Celsius, 4.1 degrees above normal, was recorded at Colaba weather station, representative of south Mumbai. At Santacruz weather station, representative of Mumbai and suburbs, the minimum temperature was 23 degrees Celsius, 5.7 degrees above normal.

This happens to be the highest minimum temperature clocked in the month of January since 2011 and has surpassed the earlier highest minimum temperature of 22.3 degrees Celsius recorded on January 28, 2014.

Meanwhile, on January 7, according to the System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the air quality in Mumbai' dropped to 'very poor' category, with overall air quality index (AQI) standing at 309. Moreover, as per the weather forecasting and research body, the AQI of Mumbai today is poor because of low dispersion and low-temperature variation. In addition, local emissions will lead to poor AQI for Mumbai for the next two days.

On the first day of 2021, the city had clocked the highest pollution levels in four years. While lower than December 31, Mumbai's overall AQI of 307 was still in the very poor category. Besides, it was also observed that the air quality in and around Mumbai deteriorated from ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ for the first time in 2020 on New Year's Eve, December 31. Experts attributed the very poor quality of air to the inflow of air from the land (continental air) instead of that from the sea.
