The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert warning of heavy rainfall at isolated places in MumbaiPalghar and Thane on Sunday, June 19 and Monday, June 20. With this prediction, it is likely that the first heavy rainfall of the monsoon season in the city could be on Sunday.

The IMD forecast reportedly elaborated on how considering the active monsoon conditions, rainfall activity over Konkan and the adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra could gradually develop from June 18. Therefore, it says widespread rains with heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places are anticipated over the region in the period.

Based on accounts, on Thursday, June 16, the southwest monsoon covered almost complete Maharashtra. A seven-day forecast elucidates intermittent light to moderate rainfall over Mumbai till Sunday. While, a wet spell commenced on Wednesday, June 15, night in the city, short intense spells of rain were seen. Owing to this, many areas of Mumbai saw rains on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, causing Kurla and Sion, which are low-lying areas to see localised flooding.

According to narratives, in the last 24 hours ending on Thursday at 8.30 am, 12 mm rainfall was registered at IMD's Santacruz observatory. The agency also recorded high relative humidity levels at 92 per cent and maximum and minimum temperatures at 33.1 degrees Celsius and 26.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

It has been reported that since June 1, Mumbai has recorded 94.3 mm of rainfall, which is 114.1 mm under normal. Moreover, on Thursday, the southwest monsoon further advanced into some additional areas of the north Arabian Sea, the complete Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada and most parts of Vidarbha, amongst others.

Considering the rise in rainfall activity through the west coast, the IMD has warned the fishermen to not venture along and off the north Maharashtra coast on June 20.
