According to reports, Mahim's St. Michael Church in Mumbai looks to go carbon neutral in the next two years. The church has undertaken a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory analysis to ascertain how it can curtail emissions.

Based on accounts, Emmanuel D’Silva, a local resident and environmental engineer elaborated on how the church emitted an aggregate of 44 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions in 2021 which can be taken as its yearly baseline. Carbon dioxide equivalence measures the amount of carbon dioxide for a mixture of greenhouse gases which will have global warming potential over a span of time.

D’Silva was quoted in narratives highlighting that electricity consumption was the largest contributor to the carbon footprint in the church. Surprisingly, the transport was not significantly large in its share. This he says is because the employees and visitors of the church either walk or use public transport since they reside in the vicinity.

In addition to this, the use of stationery paper and piped gas contributed to some extent to the church's carbon footprint. These findings were reportedly verified by a private company working in the energy and climate space in Hyderabad.

Narratives mention that Fr Lancy Pinto, parish priest of St. Michael Church, highlighted that they will expand the church's rooftop solar capacity by 10-20 kilowatts per hour. They'll do so by making use of the attached school's terrace. He added that they are contemplating financially contributing to community-driven, emission-curtailing projects.

Recently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) introduced the Mumbai Climate Action Plan that looks to make the city carbon neutral by 2050. Carbon neutrality is attained by having net zero emissions which means balancing the greenhouse gases emitted.
