After witnessing scanty rainfall for brief period, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alert, indicating possibility of heavy rains at isolated places, for six districts in Maharashtra for the next two days.
As per the weather department, yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai, Palghar, Thane and Sindhudurg; whereas, Raigad and Ratnagiri received orange alert warning on Wednesday, August 2.
On the other hand, yellow alert continues for Mumbai and Sindhudurg and orange alert for Raigad and Ratnagiri on Thursday, August 3; however, it gets upgraded to orange alert for Palghar and Thane districts.
Meanwhile, a green alert, indicating possibility of moderate rainfall, for Mumbai has been issued and yellow alert has been given to the districts of Palghar, Raigad, Thane and Ratnagiri for Friday, August 4. Thereafter, a gradual reduction in rain activity is expected during next 3-4 days.
Chances of below average rainfall in August and September
Barring the exception of some districts, the month of July saw more than average rainfall. But the month of August is likely to be more dry.
Maharashtra is also predicted to have below average rainfall in the months of August and September.
However, it is pertinent to note that Mumbai, on Monday, July 31, surpassed the season's required average rainfall which is 2,318.8 mm.
Despite a delayed start to the monsoon, IMD's Santacruz observatory recorded 2,318.8 mm of rainfall between June and July. Till Monday morning, July 31, total rainfall recorded for the season was 2,318.5 mm - 0.3 mm short. However, with 0.4 mm of rainfall recorded in the nine hours ending 5.30 pm on Monday, the same was covered up for said IMD officials.
Besides, July has also set a new rain record for itself with 1,769.8 mm of rainfall. This was also in excess of the average for the month which is 855.7 mm. Previously, the all-time highest rainfall recorded for the month of July was 1,502.6 mm in the year 2020.
