Mumbai receives 67 per cent more rainfall this season

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city of Mumbai has received 67 per cent more rainfall than the average seasonal rainfall.

As per the meteorological body, the seasonal rainfall in the state has been normal. Maharashtra has recorded 16 per cent excess rain this year, with Marathwada recording surplus rain throughout the season. Even though 19 per cent and +19 per cent rainfall of the long period average is termed normal, Marathwada has clocked 30 per cent more downpour than the seasonal average at 866.1 mm rain. However, three districts in Vidarbha, namely, Amravati (-20), Akola (-27) and Yavatmal (-24) – recorded deficient rainfall.

Earlier in the month, Mumbai experienced continual downpour across the city. This resulted in a massive amount of waterlogging which was reported at the Sion station on the Central Railway line. Moreover, many roads in Hindmata, Lalbaug, Andheri, Malad, Borivali, Kurla, Matunga had been submerged.

The state received 826.7 mm of rain from June 1 to August 17. The previous monsoon received 713.7 mm of rain during this period. Six out of the 36 districts of the state received heavy rainfall since June 1, while Yavatmal, Gondia and Akola received less rainfall.

There are seven lakes - Bhatsa, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar on Thane-Nashik belt and Tulsi and Vihar in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP) which provide water to the city of Mumbai. Out of these, Vihar and Tulsi had already started overflowing. Large lakes like Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna are also almost full.
