According to the Swiss air tracking index IQAir, a real-time air quality monitor, Mumbai has been ranked as the most polluted city in India and second most globally within a week between January 29 and February 8.


On January 29, Mumbai was ranked 10th in the ranking of the worst places. For the last few days, the air of Mumbai is getting worse and worse, due to which now Mumbai has come on the second number in this list. On 13 February Mumbai overtook Delhi as the most polluted city in India and became the third unhealthiest city worldwide in terms of air quality.

According to the CPCB data, between November 2022 and January this year, the number of 'poor' and 'very poor' days in Mumbai was more than double that of the previous three winters. According to a 2020 research by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) and IIT-Bombay, dust from road or other construction work accounts for over 71% of the particulate matter load in Mumbai's air. Factories, power plants, airports and garbage dumps have contributed to making Mumbai's air one of the dirtiest to breathe.
