In a slight relief to Mumbaikars, the city’s air quality saw a slight improvement after breathing ‘very poor’ air for four consecutive days.

The System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) on Monday evening, January 9, recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 208 in Mumbai. With this, the air quality dips to ‘poor’ category. However, it is pertinent to note that none of the nine stations across Mumbai recorded ‘satisfactory’ air quality.

On the other hand, the experts remarked that the AQI may just be a temporary relief for the citizens and the Mumbai’s air quality will drop to the ‘very poor’ category in the coming days.

The AQI of Chembur still remained in the ‘very poor’ category at 303. The AQI of Mazgaon, which was in the ‘very poor’ category a few days ago stood at 273, Malad at 228, Colaba at 215 and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) at 208 all remained in the poor category.

The AQI of Andheri at 173, Borivali at 114 Bhandup at 108 and Worli at 104 all fell in the Moderate Category.

Meanwhile, the AQI of Navi Mumbai recorded on SAFAR stood at 322, which falls in the ‘very poor category’.

The department attributes this improvement to the increased surface wind speed and direction coming from the ocean. Clarifying further, SAFAR directed stated that this is just a temporary relief though, once wind reversal happens in three-four days, the AQI will again drop to a ‘very poor’ category.”
