Mumbai’s Air Quality Worsens as Smog Pushes AQI to 127

Mumbai experienced a noticeable decline in air quality as a dense layer of smog covered several parts of the city. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) rose sharply from 94 to 127 within a day, shifting conditions into the “moderate” pollution category, as per the report by the Times Of India.

Unlike the usual morning haze that clears by midday, the smog lingered well into the afternoon, reducing visibility and affecting daily commutes. Many residents reported a heavy, hazy atmosphere across roads and residential areas.

While the citywide AQI remained in the moderate range, certain monitoring stations, particularly near high-traffic and construction-heavy zones recorded significantly higher pollution levels. Environmental experts attributed the spike to unfavourable weather conditions, including reduced wind speed, which prevented pollutants from dispersing.

Ongoing construction activity and dust are also believed to have contributed to the rise in particulate matter levels.

Health authorities have advised vulnerable groups, including children, senior citizens, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, to limit outdoor exposure until air quality improves.
