NMMC civic chief, Abhijit Bangar said that the civic body has worked hard under the Majhi Vasundhara campaign of the government to turn various areas of the city into green belts. Miyawaki method is used for the developing dense mini forests in the city that has limited space availability.
In the Miyawaki (named after Japanese Botanists) method, several native species are planted close to each other, which ensure that the plants grow upwards rather than sideways. This leads to faster growth of plants and denser green cover. All indigenous species will complement the local ecosystem.
The NMMC Tree Authority has estimated INR 43 crores budget for 2021-22 during which it has planned various measures to turn Navi Mumbai into a garden city. This is a CSR funded project, said the NMMC Commissioner.
Moreover, the civic body has planned to develop many such Urban Forests planned in the city of gardens.
Last year, Environment and Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray had stated that 65 plots of the BMC will now have 4,00,000 plants of Indian origin, which will be planted in the Japanese Miyawaki method. He further stated that this 'dream project' was initiated by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and the urban forests are the need of the hour.
