Thane: NGO Volunteers and Locals Conduct Cleanup Drive As a Symbolic Protest

Thane’s Kolshet creek underwent a cleanup drive conducted by volunteers of an NGO as well as local community members. 

Known as the 'Clean the Creek' initiative, this was launched by the Muse Foundation, Kolshet Gaav Utkarsh Samajik Sanstha, and Thane City Gaavthaan Koliwade Paade Sanvardhan Samiti.

Organizers said that this cleanup drive is their form of protest against the inaction of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) with regard to waste management. 

Participants in the cleanup drive also said that this initiative is being undertaken to increase awareness about the harmful effects of dumping garbage, cutting mangroves while also educating the masses about the importance of protecting these sensitive ecosystems.

The cleanup drive was conducted by a total of 35 volunteers which included some members from the local community as well as people from nearby villages, and some young students.

This is the second consecutive week where the volunteers have conducted a cleanup drive, and the organizers have said that they will continue to hold more events like this. Volunteers said that they recovered waste particles like cigarette packets, liquor bottles, and offerings made at places of worship. 

After the garbage was collected, the volunteers even segregated the waste to make the job easier for civic garbage collectors.
