The Member of Parliament (MP) and Chairman of the Road Safety Committee, Arvind Sawant, asked the BMC to ensure garbage collecting vans strictly operate before 8 am and after 8 pm in view of road safety, cleanliness and pollution.

The panel led by south Mumbai MP Arvind Sawant emphasised the need to be strict with two-wheeler riders that have been flouting traffic rules and those parking vehicles illegally on the road.

Sharing more information, Sawant pointed out the problem of parking in Mumbai calling it 'very serious' and said that if Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and BEST provide space for parking, then the problems will definitely be reduced. This was suggested considering the increasing number of vehicles in Mumbai which, on a daily basis, leads to heavy traffic. Further, he also said that the State Road Safety Council should be informed to take a strategic decision to de-register old vehicles.

The panel has suggested awareness at civic ward level on Good Samaritan laws with help of local public representatives. This will encourage more people to come forward to save mishap victims. The committee also mentioned about IIT students developing a machine to combat pollution. It has asked the transport department to check if such machines/gadgets can be used to reduce the vehicular pollution in the city.

According to the panel, there should be proper surveillance and correctional measures at black spots which were accident-prone to reduce mishaps in future.

Sources said in the past, there were incidents of rash driving with such vehicles. The meeting was attended by mayor Kishori Pednekar and senior officials.

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar suggested that a special day should be implemented as a cycle day in different parts of the city to help reduce traffic and pollution problems.
